Anti-aircraft gun in action during the battle

Soldiers silhouetted against the sky. They are preparing to fire an anti-aircraft gun. On the right of the photograph a soldier is being handed a large shell for the gun. The Battle of Broodseinde (October 1917) was part of a larger offensive - the third Battle of Ypres - engineered by Sir Douglas Haig to capture the Passchendaele ridge. Our anti-aircraft gunners spot a Hun plane

This photograph of gunners rushing to man two anti-aircraft guns may have been a contrived shot, as the man in the foreground is grinning broadly, which seems unlikely if this was a real incident. Anti-aircraft guns became increasingly important as the role of the air force developed during the war. The guns are mounted on lorries.
