rack-and-pinion steering is the steering mechanism that consists of a gear that meshes with a toothed bar called a "rack." The ends of the rack are linked to the wheels with tire rods . When the gear is rotated by the steering shaft, it moves the rack from side to side, turning the wheels. Many believe rack-and-pinion steering delivers a more positive and precise feel, thereby improving control and handling.
